The greatest among you must be your servant. Whoever exalts himself will be humbled; but whoever humbles himself will be exalted!
Jesus spoke to the crowds and to his disciples, saying,
"The scribes and the Pharisees
have taken their seat on the chair of Moses.
Therefore, do and observe all things whatsoever they tell you,
but do not follow their example.
For they preach but they do not practice.
They tie up heavy burdens hard to carry
and lay them on people's shoulders,
but they will not lift a finger to move them.
All their works are performed to be seen.
They widen their phylacteries and lengthen their tassels.
They love places of honor at banquets, seats of honor in synagogues,
greetings in marketplaces, and the salutation 'Rabbi.'
As for you, do not be called 'Rabbi.'
You have but one teacher, and you are all brothers.
Call no one on earth your father;
you have but one Father in heaven.
Do not be called 'Master';
you have but one master, the Christ.
The greatest among you must be your servant.
Whoever exalts himself will be humbled;
but whoever humbles himself will be exalted."
Matthew 23:1-12
It is so true that the greatest among you must be your servant. Whoever exalts himself will be humbled; but whoever humbles himself will be exalted! This Bible verse ironically by the same name as the priest we knew of that name was exactly like what Jesus describes here. Someone who things they are above all, know more, they can give great homilies, know the law, have so much knowledge, can speak so eloquently, but does not practice what the law says. They are prideful, indifference, and not humble at all. We saw that in our old priest at the last church we used to go to, that priest would never look at us, talk to us, have anything to do with us. We would even see him at the local gym, he was the same way, ignored us, avoided us, was so indifferent. It was sad to see. We stopped going to that church and switched to one closer to our house, that new priest was so loving and kind, inviting us to his happy hours, always showing love and kindness, always welcoming the stranger. It is like people and priests, some are good souls, full of Jesus, reflecting Him, imitating, and loving like Him! That is what matters, actions are more important than know all the law, but not putting any of it to practice. Do you know people like this? I know some, a handful of people with so much hate and TDS, they let their hate blind them, and when you do not join their hate clubs, they will cancel you. Again, it is all about love, Jesus reminded us about that. Priests need to show love, we all need to show love, like Jesus said, "Therefore, do and observe all things whatsoever they tell you, but do not follow their example. For they preach but they do not practice. They tie up heavy burdens hard to carry and lay them on people's shoulders, but they will not lift a finger to move them. All their works are performed to be seen." We need to practice what we preach Matthew! We need to always show love like Jesus!
