On a sabbath Jesus went to dine
at the home of one of the leading Pharisees,
and the people there were observing him carefully.
In front of him there was a man suffering from dropsy.
Jesus spoke to the scholars of the law and Pharisees in reply, asking,
“Is it lawful to cure on the sabbath or not?”
But they kept silent; so he took the man and,
after he had healed him, dismissed him.
Then he said to them
“Who among you, if your son or ox falls into a cistern,
would not immediately pull him out on the sabbath day?”
But they were unable to answer his question.
~Luke 14:1-6
Wow! More miracles from Jesus: Who among you, if your son or ox falls into a cistern, would not immediately pull him out on the sabbath day? Today in the Catholic mass reading, the Gospel shares another miracle from Jesus! He performed it on the Sabbath. He confronts the hypocritical Pharisees who do not like Him not just because He performs miracles even on the Sabbath, but I think because He is really God and can perform miracles. They are very jealous, envious, and insecure, like many today, they are like this too, when someone else is able to do something good and has important powers we need to applaud it, not shame someone. I know that happened to me in my work as a professor often, I had great success, worked very hard, always tried to be kind to all, yet some take advantage of you, or are jealous, envious, and become insecure due to your success. They are the same that ordered to have Jesus murdered, they did. That is what insecurity, jealousy, and envy do to people. It doesn't matter if it is a Sabbath, on Sunday or whenever, if we can do good, if we can help others, if we can perform a miracle of kindness to another, it doesn't matter what time of the day or week it is, we need to do good for others. We are called to follow Jesus, to reflect, forgive, imitate, and love like Him! We can perform miracles too, even if it is with our kindness and love, while some may reject you, God never will. Love always wins over hate, sin, lawlessness, and evil, we need to do good! We need to love everyone! We need to live our lives for God!
